Having a rucksack that is properly packed is a very important part of your preparation before your trip. Having a rucksack that is properly packed will ensure that your rucksack is comfortable whilst you are wearing it and this will make your journey much more pleasant.
This short video is designed to help you pack your rucksack properly:
Having a waterproof liner is essential and there are many products available on the market today that are designed for this purpose. However, if you have a tight budget or simply do not have time to purchase one, then a standard bin liner will be efficient.
If you have a sleeping bag, then you should pack your sleeping bag first. Ideally, your sleeping bag should always be placed in a separate waterproof bag before it is packed. pack your sleeping bag sideways in your rusksack and make sure it is at the very bottom of you rrucksack.
Next, all your dry clothes should be packed in a separate dry bag and then packed in your rucksack directly on top of your sleeping bag.
If you have any crockery, food or a cooking stove to pack, try to bag them also on top of the sleeping bag but as close to your back as possible. You should then try to use the clothes bag to hold them in place.
Water bottle (if applicable) should be packed where they will fit in your rucksack but should be as close to your back as possible.
Waterproofs should be packed as close to the top of your rucksack as possible so that they are easily accessible if you need them.Obviously, if they are wet, you should ensure that the are kept outside the ‘dry’ bag and away from dry clothing.
If your rucksack has a top pocket (which most good rucksacks do have), you can use this for keeping snacks and other essential items so that they are readily available when you require them.
If you are taking a sleeping mat with you, this can be placed in a dry bag and attached on the top of your rucksack and securely fastened.
